British - Born in London
Since childhood, yachts have been the primary influence in my life. Throughout my teens I was competing in club and national yacht racing events in the United Kingdom, whilst also gaining experience doing national and international yacht deliveries. At the age of 19, I started competing in the elite international yacht racing regattas, which very quickly developed into a full time professional yacht racing career.
During this period, I represented different national teams (allowed foreign quota) and crewed on numerous yachts, winning major international races and regatta series. I had the responsibility of supervising the specialized construction of two of the three yachts for the 1978 Italian national team. Italy then won the inaugural Sardinia Cup, and once the series had finished, I was offered the opportunity to deliver a large motor yacht from Kuwait to Italy. I immediately accepted. At 25 years of age, the experienced gained from sailing the Persian Gulf, Indian Ocean, Red Sea and the Suez Canal proved to be invaluable as a foundation for my career. After the delivery, I was given the permanent Captains position.
I have been the Captain of 10 privately owned large yachts spanning over 30 years, sailed over 300,000 miles, visited 67 countries (including islands) and had the pleasure of meeting numerous notable guests. Yachts obviously require continuous maintenance and strict adherence to International regulations, Class requirements and operational standards, therefore I have spent appropriate periods in various Shipyards, namely in, Bahrain, England, Italy, France, Spain (Mallorca, Barcelona, Vigo), Holland, Gibraltar, USA (Ft. Lauderdale, Miami, San Diego) Curacao, Panama and Mexico (Manzanillo, Ensenada). Considering the above, I am therefore generally accepted as one of the more experienced Captains of both sail and motor yachts.
My final position was for 12 years as the Captain and Marine Executive for the then, richest person in the world, primarily based in Mexico. During this period we cruised the Caribbean, Mediterranean (East and West - including visiting special events such as the Monaco Grand Prix and the Athens Olympics in 2004), the Pacific West coast between Panama and San Diego, spending long periods in the Sea of Cortez.
Throughout my career I have made, and still maintain, good friends, associates and significant contacts throughout the yachting industry.
I have been Captain of the following type of yachts:
Custom Built (1), Feadship (4), Abeking & Rasmussen (1), Benetti (1), Lurssen (1), Nautor Swan (1), 12 Metre Class (1)
Plus numerous different yachts as crew, relief Captain and delivery Captain.
