Insight into an American yachting family since 1948 and a very special classic motor yacht. Motor Yacht NEWS headlined last week at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show 2014. She was moored in the Los Olas Marina slip, by Denison Superyacht Division, and I had the chance to be onboard with inspirational yacht builder, shipbuilding authority, and head of one of the most famous yachting families in the USA, Kit Denison, on his birthday.
The 121ft custom superyacht Denison 'NEWS' was built in 1986 by Christopher W ‘Kit’ Denison, father of President of Denison Superyacht Division Bob Denison in the USA. I was lucky to meet him on this stunning semi-displacement aluminium hull classic 36.9 metre motor yacht he had built with designer Jack Bursack, and architect Joe Langloise almost 30 years ago.
Expert yacht builder Kit, had followed in his father Frank’s footsteps as a yacht builder, and became part of the Broward Marine group in Fort Lauderdale. Kit had built three boats before leaving high-school and was destined to build a yachting family and a beautiful yacht in NEWS. After leaving Broward Marine, Mr. Denison Senior set up Denison Marine which later become Denison Yacht Sales now owned and operated by his son Bob Denison. It is certainly a family affair.
NEWS has been well maintained over 3 decades and had a recent refit in 2007 to modernize what is a timeless classic. NEWS boasts a new radar, new kitchen as well as work to the hull and a stunning new green paint job. The present owner uses the cockpit on the aft deck for family BBQs, picnics and social events.
During the visit we had a chat with Bob Denison’s mother who was admiring the original hand-crafted teak interior walls with a lumber professional. “In the dining room you can appreciate the age of the trees used on the saloons walls.” The quality of the workmanship is clear with teak and burled ash detailed joiner work. Tecona Grandis as it is known is a tropical hardwood and has been used in boat building for over 200 years owing to its “durability and water resistance.” Kit Denison clearly took advantage of Teak’s qualities when building News nearly 30 years ago.
Marketing Manager Thomas Chambers states: “Kit was involved in the building of approximately 120 motor yachts between Broward and Denison Marine – from 38’ to 140’; the heritage in boat building is clear and it is no wonder Denison Superyachts Division is going from strength to strength today fuelled by 3 generations of shipbuilding and yacht sales.
Bob, who is the man charged with selling NEWS came out of college and started Denison Yacht Sales as a yacht broker. He started in a small Florida office selling Florida fishing boats and motor yachts. 10 years of exponential growth allowed Denison Superyacht Division to be born and now Denison is selling large motor and sailing yachts in their “double digits” each month including yachts built by his father and forefathers out of more than 10 offices throughout the World. Eddy Denison is Bob’s brother, working as a broker and he suggested that NEWS could well be sold in Fort Lauderdale before she heads back to Newport; selling boats is obviously in the blood.
If you are looking to buy a classic motor yacht in Florida this winter, head to Newport and make sure you take a tour of NEWS. There is a formal dining room, kitchen, and 3 comfortable statesrooms sleeping 6 persons, the master with his and her heads and two twins. The aft deck saloon is comfortable and traditional, and the fly bridge boasts some pretty fun toys. A very efficient crew who know the boat inside out are ready to meet new owners. Unique features include the cockpit for any family gatherings or even for a corporate cocktail and a modern stabilization system to reduce roll.
